Below are some basics about our embroidery machine and more information on how to handle it.

¶ Receiving an introduction
It is necessary to get an introduction to the machine before using it for the first time. Make sure to ask in the chat, preferably in the Textiles channel in matrix.

¶ The machine's home
The machine lives on the Embroidery Cart.
To the right side of the cart you will find the embroidery frames.
You will find all sorts of supplies at the cart, like fleece, thread and bobbin thread and more bobbins.
Replacement embroidery needles can be found in the pull-out display that hangs above the Textiles desks.
The Embroidery Cart can be moved.
Make sure to put the brakes on the cart wheels any time it's stationary.
We recommend moving the cart where there is enough space for the machine's arm to move without obstacles.
Be mindful that the Textiles corner is rather small and gets crowded easily - consider moving to the lobby if it's not disrupting others' work.
¶ Needles
- ONLY use embroidery needles.
Needle broken or not sharp? You can replace the needle, but please ONLY use the ones labeled as "embroidery needles".
Replacements are available, on the wooden pull-out at the wall right of the window.
If no replacements are available, or running low, please contact one of the curators for getting new needles.
If you are unsure how to do it, please ask. - The automatic threading will not work with thin needles, use of microtex or silk needles might damage the mechanism. Please refer to previous point.
¶ Thread

ONLY use embroidery thread.
It is treated in a way that it's silkier than regular sewing thread, for optimal embroidery results. Embroidery thread lives at the Embroidery Cart; if you're not sure if your thread is correct please always ask. -
Using any but the original Brother bobbin spools may result in the weight based sensor for bobbin-thread not detecting you running out of thread.
¶ Machine Settings
- The use of embroidery fleece is generally recommended, especially with stretchy fabrics
- Speed can be adjusted in 3 steps ( Page symbol at bottom left. 5th page of the menu.)
- Experience says a lost or broken thread is detected by the sensors 22 stitches after it happens.
(bottom of the screen needle-symbol +/- allows you to go back and forth or skip between colors.) - if you need to resize your project, please do so on your origianl file and export a new .pes file with the desired size
Using the resize funtion in the digital display of the machine can cause scaling issues to the amount of stitches.
¶ Additional notes
- This is not a quiet machine, please check for events scheduled before embarking on longer projects.
- The machine was out of order and in repair for about 2 months in 2025, just 1 year after we got it. Please help us take good care of it

The machine goes through a lot of thread, embroidery fleece and heavily used needles. We would love to continue replenishing that.
A suggested price list is available on-site. We suggest an extra donation of 2 Euro per meter of embroidery fleece.
