The microscope is a Zeiss “LSM 21/31” confocal laser scanning microscope which can also be used as a 'normal' optical microscope in conventional mode. For conventional mode is has a standard visible light lightsource. For laser mode it has a 1 mW/1.15 μm helium-neon laser as well as a 660 nm diode laser. For detection of the laser light, it has a photomultiplier tube (PMT) for visible light and a germanium photodiode for IR wavelengths. It has reflection as well as transmission and flourescence modes.
