¶ What’s xHain?
We are a Hack And Make space, established 2016. Read more about us and what we do here. Reade in depth here
¶ What can I do here?
You can 3d print, build electronic equipment, use our laser cutters, work on your woodworking project, sew your dream ball gown, embroider cool logos on your shirts and much, much more.
¶ How do I become a member?
The first thing to do is to create an account here.
You should receive an email with further information on how to set up your monthly donation, but in case you don’t:
Set up your donation via monthly bank transfer. The minimum suggested donation is 23 EUR regular, 13.37 EUR reduced and 42 EUR solidarity. The bank details:

Without your treename there’s no way of linking your user account to the donation, which makes making you a member impossible. Please make sure you add it. Make the tree name is in German and did not get autotranslated by your mail program.
¶ Is the space open?
We have a dedicated chat room with a faithful bot that announces when the space is opened. No need to ask, the current status is the last message the bot posted.
¶ I already set up the donation, why am I not a member?
After your donation is created, please allow a few days for processing. This is a human handled process done by volunteers and thus can take a few days. Usually this won’t take over a week.
¶ I’m not a member, when can I drop by?
You are welcome to come by whenever the space is open. Find it if it’s open here. Additionally we have scheduled opening times:
Open mondays: every monday from 18:00 you are welcome to drop by for a tour around the space, and many of our events are open for everyone. Check the calendar and the chat and come over.
¶ I’m not a member and in the past I could just come when the door was open and use the machine, but now I was turned away, why?
Unfortunately, this shouldn’t have happened. xHain is a member space, and while sometimes the door is wide open and there are many people around and you can just come in and there wouldn’t be an issue with it, at most times it’s a “members only” situation. The good news is - we are not an exclusive members club, and anyone can join! Get more info here and become a member!
¶ I’m a minor, can i become a member? How much is the monthly donation?
Of course! You can join just like anyone else, by making a monthly donation. You don’t have to have your own bank account, the only thing you need is your tree name. The monthly donation for minors is a symbolic 1 euros per month. Important: if you’re under 12, you need to be accompanied by an adult.
¶ I’m outside and there are people inside, but they won't let me in even though I'm a member. Why?
Key holding members in the space are responsible for the space, and anyone and anything inside it. If someone is alone, they don’t necessarily stay in the lobby at all times. Additionally some people only drop by to pick up something for a few minutes and leave, and will have to make sure there’s no one left, and opening up only for a few minutes doesn’t make a lot of sense.
¶ How do I become a key-holder?
Ask for a key at the Round Table. After being a member for 3 months, ask 3 key holders to vouch for you and put your name in the next Round Table agenda (Available for members only. If you don't have access please talk to us in the chat).
¶ When is the next 3d printing workshop?
Since the space and the introduction workshops are being held by volunteers, there’s no set schedule for introduction sessions. 3d printing is our most sought after introduction, so usually it will happen at least once a month. Keep an eye on the chat and the calendar and drop by the next time a session takes place.
¶ Why isn’t someone at the space all the time?
We are a community, not a for-profit business. The space is run by volunteers and no one is getting paid which is the spirit we want to maintain. However most days will see at least a few members present and the space will be open for members.

¶ How can I book a time slot to use a machine?
Booking time slots isn’t possible. We operate in a “first-come-first-serve” manner. Anyone who wants and is authorised to use a machine, can come, and if it’s free, they can use it for however long they want to. We try to be fair and excellent to each other, but there’s no guarantee that when you drop by the machine you’re interested in will be available.
¶ Is there a way for me to know if a machine is free? I live far away and don’t want to travel for nothing
Unfortunately not. However if you like, you can ask in the respective channel if the machine you’re interested in is available. Please be mindful that not all members check the chat regularly.
¶ How can I get an introduction for the Woodworking branch?
Every Wednesday Tom, the curator, is offering help with wood projects from 17:00 till 19:00. This might be a good time to get an introduction if there’s not too much pressure. Otherwise please ask in the chat for the hobelholle.
¶ How can I get an introduction for the 3d printers?

¶ I want to contribute more, how do I do that?
Awesome! As a member, there are many ways you can contribute. If you want to contribute to a certain branch, just talk to the curators. If you want to contribute in general, add an item to the agenda for the next Round Table. If you just want to contribute and not know how, and you can and simply prefer - you can increase your monthly donation. Any help is welcome!
Another good way to contribute is to join the Infrastructure Days. Once a month we work on the space together. See the calendar for the next one.

¶ I’m a member and want to implament a rule, or change an existing one. How do I do that?
You can add an item to the agenda for the next Round Table. Make sure to write your name and attend the meeting for your item to be discussed.
¶ I’m a new member but I’m lost and not sure how things work. What should I do?
Totally understandable. Being new to xHain can be really overwhelming. Currently the best solution is probably to introduce yourself in the chat, and maybe ask someone to meet you there. That way you can get to know someone a little better and ask your questions. If you’re not interested in writing in the chat or approaching anyone, maybe come to the space when it’s open, and if you see someone that looks available enough, try and talk to them. We’re usually really nice!

¶ I left/forgot something in the space, what can I do about it?
We have a lost and found box, usually things which are found around the space will be placed there. However please be aware that the safest way not to have your things disappear is to put your name on it. We have a lot of equipment, things sometimes get scattered and misplaced and it’s very hard to track things (especially things which are used by the space) which aren’t clearly labelled.
¶ I want to organize a meetup/workshop. What’s the process?
Please put an item in the agenda for the next Round Table meeting. Make sure you add your name and come to the meeting.
¶ I have a 3d printer I don't use. Would you like to have it?
Maybe! We’d like to know of course what type of printer it is and in what condition, but it’s always good to have an additional working 3d printer. Let us know!
